Urban churches in Malang encounter numerous challenges, particularly in engaging the participation of people, especially overseas students, in various church activities. These activities span across liturgical, pastoral, and social religious realms, presenting both potential and challenges for building sustainable communities. The research delves into the participatory awareness of overseas students in urban churches in Malang, drawing inspiration from Edward Schillebeeckx's philosophy. The study seeks to answer key questions: How do overseas students perceive the potentials and challenges in constructing sustainable communities? What is their understanding of participatory awareness in the context of developing sustainable communities within urban churches in Malang? Additionally, the research explores whether overseas students recognize participation as a means for humans to engage in the life of God. Utilizing discourse methods and distributed questionnaires, the research collected data from Catholic overseas students in Malang. Findings reveal that the foremost opportunity for building a sustainable community lies in advancing education, while the major challenge is the escalating urbanization. Importantly, overseas students comprehend that engaging in activities promoting sustainable development is a manifestation of their participation in the divine life. The study underscores the awareness among overseas students in Malang regarding their pivotal role in constructing a sustainable community. They acknowledge both the potentials and challenges inherent in this pursuit, demonstrating a conscious willingness to participate in activities fostering sustainable development as a tangible expression of their participation in the divine life. Overall, overseas students in Malang actively contribute to the growth and sustainability of urban church communities.
